PDF, VCR, and VHS

Everyone knows what PDA stands for, but we use the acronym PDF a heck of a lot more in business situations.  If you don’t, then I’d like a job at your place of work.  Anyway, most people are familiar with PDFs – those attachments in emails, websites, etc. that are easy to read and navigate thanks to software programs like Adobe Reader and others.  Most people are NOT familiar with what PDF stands for, however.

PDF stands for Portable Document Format.  The format was invented by Adobe in the ’90s.

VHS tapeBonus trivialities: VCR stands for Videocassette Recorder, as you probably know, but do you know what VHS stands for?  Originally known at Vertical Helical Scan (a recording system used and developed by JVC)1, it has become more widely known as Video Home System, although that sounds like a phrase made up AFTER the acronym was made, so I’d stick with the original name and you’ll sound smarter to boot.
