NORAD – worst acronym ever?

The increasingly popular Santa Tracker website by NORAD keeps gaining momentum each year as the ways to check in get easier and easier. What a lot of people don’t know is what NORAD is or what it stands for. NORAD is the North American Aerospace Defense Command. Specifically,
“The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is a bi-national United States and Canadian organization charged with the missions of aerospace warning, aerospace control and maritime warning for North America.”1
Let’s put those first letters of each word together: N+A+A+D+C = NAADC. I have no idea how they arrived at NORAD and what happened to the missing C, but now you know what the worst acronym ever stands for! At least they’re keeping a close eye on Mr. C, even though they misplaced their own.

I totally agree. At least NORAAD would make some sense. The fact that they condense North American to NOR is pretty thin in my opinion.
