Fruit on Cream Soda Dum Dums Wrapper
The illogical wrapper with a tasty inside
Yesterday’s post was one of our more in-depth and informative entries, so today we’re going in the opposite direction with the most trivial of posts. If you are a candy lover or happen to be around kids at any time of the day, however, the following information will still be quite topical and will win you the Cliff Clavin award for Useless Information.
I have kids and, like anyone that has kids, you are sure to encounter Dum Dum lollipops at some point in the day, whether it’s at the dry cleaners, a grandmother’s purse, or just at home. All of the small designs on each wrapper makes sense – cherries on the cherry flavored one, a question mark on the mystery flavor, a root beer barrel on the root beer flavor, etc.
Then there’s my favorite, cream soda. Is there a picture of a soda can? Nope. Instead, the Spangler Candy Company choose a FRUIT design for the wrapper! Since cream soda is above the furthest thing from fruit, I had to find the answer, so I contacted Spangler directly. I was hoping to hear a story filled with history or humor, but the actual answer is, sorry to say, bor-ing. From Customer Support at Spangler Candy:
“In checking with our technical services manager, he advises that due to the lack of any real fruit flavor to distinguish cream soda, a variety of fruits are used on the wrapper. However, as you know, those are not representative of the flavors that go into making Cream Soda Dum Dums.”
I didn’t get into how illogical the answer was since there isn’t any fruit on the cotton candy or chocolate wrappers and the answer hardly had the story I was hoping for, but at least I had my answer, and now you do too. The next time your neighbor’s child tries telling you that cream soda tastes like a pineapple, orange, banana, or lemon, you can tell him that the source itself considers the flavor “fruitless,” kind of like today’s entry!

If they can put a barrel on the root beer wrapper, why can’t they put a soda can on the cream soda wrapper? Spangler’s answer makes no sense. But thank you for delving into this mystery for us. (I’m sure the Spangler Customer Support rep was surprised to receive a phone call on this issue.)
I will try to bring up this topic at my party tonight and let you know how the conversation goes : )
I’ve been wondering this for years. Thanks for the post.
Still, Cotton Candy, Root Beer, Bubble Gum, Butterscotch, all have no Fruit on them.
Original cream soda recipes often contained lemon or pineapple juices and sometimes other citrus or fruit flavors. There you go.

How disappointing!
