Adviser or Advisor?

In Sunday’s post about Van Jones, I referred to him as an “adviser,” using the same spelling as the article I read. Ever since, I have been thinking about the spelling (it was a slow weekend) because I always felt more comfortable writing “advisor.”

It turns out that both versions are acceptable, but for the sake of consistency, the Associated Press forbids “advisor” in its articles.  When using the word for personal use, though, you literally can’t go wrong, making it one of those foolproof words like canceled (or cancelled).
