Weekly Sports Roundup

If you’re not heavily into sports but know you will be around people this weekend that are, this is the post for you.  Here’s a brief synopsis of the current sports stories you should know about.

Last night Alabama beat Texas for the college football BCS National Championship.  What’s notable about the game was Texas’ star quarterback, Colt McCoy, was injured early in the 1st quarter.  Despite a freshman quarterback (Garrett Gilbert) at the helm, Texas came back from a 24-6 deficit to cut it to 24-21 but ultimately lost 37-21, largely thanks to turnovers and the running game of Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, who also missed part of the game with a tight hamstring and cramps but still put on an impressive performance.

Arenas

Arenas

Earlier in the week, Washington Wizards’ star Gilbert Arenas of the NBA was found to be storing guns in his locker at the Verizon Center where the Wizards play.  The “official” version of the story is still in limbo, but it sounds like a dispute from a card game with a teammate (Javaris Crittenton) escalated in the locker room, and turned into a situation where guns were pointed at each other.  The NBA has suspended Arenas indefinitely until the matter can be fully investigated.  Suddenly steroids, Pete Rose, and Mark Cuban don’t sound so bad.

The NFL playoffs begin this weekend.  This is considered “Wild Card” weekend because the top two teams in both conferences (New Orleans, Minnesota, Indianapolis, and San Diego) get a bye and play the winners of this week’s games.  One thing to know is that if the Eagles beat the Cowboys and the Packers beat the Cardinals, then Brett Favre and the Vikings will face his old team, the Packers, next weekend.

Lastly, here’s an interesting tidbit you can mention when your group talks about last night’s title game and you need something to say: when the freshman QB from Texas threw an interception in the 4th quarter to Javier Arenas, the play went from Gilbert to Arenas!  Given the current events in the NBA, I found that to be quite interesting!
