Toning shoes – those goofy curved sole things
You’ve seen them on displays in shoe stores in the malls, you’ve seen them in magazine ads, you’ve seen Joe Montana promoting them, and you’ve seen women in yoga pants sporting them while they walk their dogs. Those gym shoes with the curved bottoms are called toning shoes. Each brand has a different name for them, but they’re pretty much the same. Some popular brands:
- Skechers Shape Ups
- Reebok Easy Tone
- New Balance Truebalance and rock&tone
- MBT anti-shoe
Basically, the rounded bottom is supposed to create intentional instability, forcing your leg muscles to do a little extra work just to keep a normal walking pace. This is supposed to help one’s calves, hamstrings, and butt. As expected, opinions vary widely, with some doctors calling them dangerous and ineffective while some users swear by them. If you have tried them before, post your thoughts in the comments section. If you haven’t tried them, at least now you know what those women you see at Starbucks every day are wearing while walking with a latte.
