The “O” in Orangemen Stands for Overtime

The Syracuse basketball team has been busy lately – not with schoolwork but with games.  The problem is the Orangemen apparently don’t want to ever stop playing.  On March 7, Syracuse beat Marquette in OT to close out the regular season.  Then, four days later, on March 11, they took the easy route, beating Seton Hall in regulation to start the Big East Conference Tournament.

The next day, however, things got crazy.  The Orangemen beat highly ranked Connecticut in SIX overtimes, playing in a game that lasted 70 minutes on the game clock and 3 hours 46 minutes on your wristwatch.  The link below gives all the interesting stats.  What really stands out is that Syracuse had to play again the next night (or to be correct, later that day since the 6 OT game ended after 1am).  What happened in the next game against West Virginia?  Syracuse won, of course.  In overtime, of course.

That brings us to tonight.  Syracuse has played 40 minutes, 70 minutes, and 45 minutes in three consecutive nights, and tonight will be the fourth straight night of basketball.  The Big East finals pits the Orangemen against Louisville tonight.  The teams have combined to win 16 straight, so it figures to be a good game – maybe even with the possibility of… overtime!

If you need to be armed with one piece of information tonight as you watch this game with friends, tell them that Syracuse’s point guard has played in 132 minutes over the past two games alone.
