Steinbrenner Dies, All-Star notes
George Steinbrenner died today at the age of 80, suffering a massive heart attack. Everyone knows the name, but for those who don’t follow baseball, Steinbrenner was the owner of the New York Yankees who took over the team in 1973 and began decades of free spending ways in an effort to lure the best players and managers to New York. After a gaggle of World Series Championships (7 of them under his ownership) and millions of dollars made from a very lucrative TV contract, it’s safe to say that Steinbrenner was successful both on and off the field with the Yankees.
In George’s absence (he was ill before the heart attack), his sons, Hank and Hal, have assumed control of the Yankees. Need a Steinbrenner tidbit for today when you talk about him? George, known for making hasty decisions with managers, hired Billy Martin FIVE TIMES! Naturally, that means he was fired just as often!
Also today is the MLB All-Star Game. The Home Run Derby was yesterday (won by David Ortiz), and the game itself is tonight. Two important things to know if you’re a non-baseball fan and you are somewhere with the game on:
- The league that wins tonight gets home field advantage in the World Series (4 of the possible 7 games will be held in the home team’s park).
- The National League hasn’t won since 1996, yet they still hold a 40-38-2 edge overall in All-Star games.
