In honor of Spain’s win in the World Cup last month, this post will list some commonly used soccer vocabulary in Spanish. It will make for a nice reference point the next time you get involved in watching a soccer match.

- the World Cup – la Copa Mundial
- the game – el juego
- the soccer ball – el balón de fútbol
- the stadium – el estadio
- the soccer field – el campo
- the team – el equipo
- a player – un jugador
- a defender – un defensa
- a midfielder – un centrocampista
- a goalkeeper – un portero
- a forward – un delantero
- the score – el resultado
- the referee – el árbitro
- a foul – una falta
- the yellow card – la tarjeta amarilla
- the red card – la tarjeta roja
- a goal – un gol
- to score a goal – marcar un gol
- to pass the ball – pasar el balón
- to run – correr
- to win – ganar
- to lose – perder
