Roy Halladay’s playoff no-hitter
The water cooler talk today is most likely about last night’s no-hitter. Pitching for the Phillies after 12 years with the Toronto Blue Jays, Roy Halladay threw a no-hitter in his first ever playoff start, walking only one while defeating the Cincinnati Reds 4-0. What’s unique about Halladay’s feat is that he already threw a perfect game earlier this year!
In case you’re not a baseball fan and can’t remember the difference between a no-hitter and a perfect game, check out this earlier Dinner Topics post for the basic explanation. In the meantime, take these factoids with you to the water cooler:
- Roy Halladay’s nickname is “Doc.” Editor’s note: this annoys me because there is an outfielder named Matt Holliday which would obviously be a better fit for the nickname.
- The last (and only) no-hitter in postseason play was a perfect game thrown by Don Larsen of the Yankees in 1956 against the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- Halladay accepted a trade to the Phillies in the offseason in the hopes of playing in the postseason for once. Wish granted.
