PEDs and Manny Being Manny

pillsSports lingo changes by the decade depending on the hot topic of the time.  Until recently, when a guy “went yard,” people probably thought the player went home to mow his lawn (it means to hit a home run, for the uninformed).  Now the lingo in sports has as much to do with science and medicine as it does with activities on the field, since our favorite players are largely built from laboratories nowadays.

Manny Ramirez just tested positive for PEDs and will receive a 50-game suspension as a result.  That will cost him almost $8 million in pay, just several months after a ridiculous negotiating period where Manny and agent Scott Boras tried to get every last dollar from the Dodgers.  Back to the point: PEDs?

PED = performance-enhancing drug

PEDs include steroids, HGH (human growth hormone), and a zillion other lab-concocted drugs deemed illegal in specific sports.  Each sport has its own regulations, and for the most part, illegal drugs by U.S. law are illegal in professional sports.

HOWEVER, many drugs legal with a prescription are still deemed illegal by various professional sports organizations, so while we love to judge these athletes so quickly and passively, a fair amount of homework (or better yet, pre-clearance from the league) is required by them before they blindly put things into their bodies.
