Hitting For The Cycle
Last night, second baseman Ian Kinsler of the Texas Rangers became the second player this season to hit for the cycle. Hitting for the cycle means getting a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game, but not necessarily in that order. A cycle is roughly as rare as a no-hitter in baseball because of the rarity of triples in the game.
While other accomplishments are more impressive for a hitter (ex. a single, a double, and two home runs in the same game), the cycle is revered because of its rarity and because baseball people like their stats.
What was impressive about Kinsler’s cycle is that he didn’t stop there – he finished with SIX hits in six at bats, topping off his cycle with another single and double.
