Giants win World Series but few watch

TV snowFor the non-sports fan, it’s important to know that the San Francisco Giants won the World Series last night, beating the Texas Rangers 3-1 and winning the series 4 games to 1.  What most people will probably be talking about, however, will be the low ratings and how no one actually watched it.

In an unfortunate circumstance, Games 4 and 5 of the World Series were televised against direct competition from Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football.  On Sunday, the NFL beat out baseball in the ratings war, but thankfully for MLB, Game 5 registered higher ratings last night than Monday Night Football.  The series didn’t set any record lows in terms of ratings (although Game 3 earned the second lowest rating ever) but will hardly be remembered as a classic.

For what it’s worth, Edgar Renteria was the hero last night with a late inning 3-run home run for the Giants.  Renteria is the same player who won the 1997 World Series with the Marlins with a thrilling 11th inning single in Game 7.
