Duke wins, but other coaches raking it in on sofa

The water cooler talk this morning will undeniably be about last night’s NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship game, won by Duke over Butler in thrilling fashion, 61-59.  If you didn’t see it, Butler star Gordon Hayward missed a half court shot at the buzzer that would have won it for the small school underdogs.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski (pronounced “shuh-shef-skee”) reportedly isn’t interested in the head coaching job for the New Jersey Nets which was rumored to be offered to him for anywhere from $10 to $15 million per year.  After three decades of loyalty at Duke and the actual basketball court being named after him, it’s going to take a lot more than just money to pry “Coach K” away from the Blue Devils.  Butler coach Brad Stevens will likely be seeking greener pastures simply because Butler won’t be able to match the offers of larger schools, and hitting his coaching stride at the young age of 33, money will matter for Stevens and his family, especially when the money goes from his current $300,000 per year salary to $3 million per year, which has been reported as being offered to him by Oregon.

What YOU can add to the conversation, though, is this interesting tidbit from a recent Bloomberg article: NCAA coaches who have been fired are sitting at home earning $79.5 million!!1  Think about that the next time your alma mater sends you a donation request.
