Cy Young = Old pitcher, yearly award

GreinkeZack Greinke won the 2009 American League Cy Young Award today.  For the baseball illiterate, the Cy Young Award is given each year to the best pitcher in each league (American and National) as voted on by a selected group of sportswriters.  Why is it called “the Cy Young?”

YoungCy Young was a pitcher wayyyy back in 1890 – 1911 who finished his career with 511 wins, a ridiculous total by any standards.  While the game has changed quite a bit over the past century, Young’s records have become even more insurmountable (300 career wins is currently the almost unreachable goal).

So… when you hear some baseball lifers discussing the award this week and they are talking about the difficulty of a 20-win season (Greinke only won 16 games for a bad Royals team this year), throw out the stat that Cy Young had five 30-win seasons!
