Boston Marathon – Not For Everyone
Over 23,000 runners stretched at the starting line early yesterday morning for the start of the Boston Marathon. If you’ve ever wondered why the Boston Marathon receives so much more national coverage than other cities’ runs, it’s because the qualifications are like no other.
Most cities’ marathons require nothing more than an ID, an entry fee, a waiver, and some running shoes, maybe with the promise that you can shuffle in before the sun goes down. If you can run the Boston Marathon, however, you are tearing up the Massachusetts pavement, because the time qualifications are arduous. So you finally broke the 4 hour mark in your last marathon? That will qualify you… if you’re a man over 60!
A man in his late 30s must qualify with a time of 3 hours 15 minutes or better, while a woman of the same age must beat 3 hours 45minutes. You can find all of the time qualifications here.
Bonus notes:
- over 38,000 entrants ran in 1996, the 100th Boston Marathon
- a small handful of runners over the age of 80 finished yesterday (Bravo!)
- the race is run on the third Monday in April, known as Patriots’ Day
