What is Mensa?

She is smarter than you!

You’ve heard it a million times – Mensa.  You know it’s a bunch of smart people, but do you really know what it’s all about?  Is it just a group of poindexters praising each other for being smart?  Time to find out.

Mensa is a group founded in 1946 by a couple Brits in which anyone can be included if they pass an exam.  The exam is designed to be passed by only those with an IQ in the top 2% of the population.1  Technically, if you have taken an official IQ exam and scored in the appropriate top 2%, you don’t even need an additional test from Mensa.

Mensa’s purpose?  There is no ulterior motive by this group.  It exists simply to provide a place for intelligent people to socialize, debate, etc., regardless of one’s background or social standing.  A 2-year-old recently was accepted to Mensa!  Among other famous Mensans are James Woods, Geena Davis, and Isaac Asimov. 2

There are over 110,000 members globally, and like college alumni, there are plenty of national, regional, and local groups, so a gathering of similar brainiacs is never far away.

Next time your kid is playing one of those Nintendo Brain Age games, you can encourage her to set her sights on something a little higher such as a Mensa membership!
