Vegemite – New, Improved, and still Gross

If you are a fan of 80s music, you may remember Vegemite from the song Down Under from Men At Work (“He just smiled and gave me a  Vegemite sandwich…”).  For those not familiar with obscure lyrics from Australian bands from several decades ago led by a singer with cameos in the TV show Scrubs, Vegemite is an Australian spread (which I personally cannot stand) which is sort of salty, bitter, and brown.  Sounds deelish, huh?

It’s basically made of brewer’s yeast and Australians spread it everything!  It has the consistency of peanut butter, and citizens of other Commonwealth nations like it too: the Brits and New Zealanders all swear by the stuff. (Although the Brits also have their own nasty version called “Marmite.” S~h~u~d~d~e~r.)

Vegemite was in the news recently because Kraft Foods Australia has made an updated version.  Hurrah!  Basically, they’ve mixed it with cream cheese to make it more spreadable.  Just what I was waiting for – not.  They are even going to have a contest to name this new and improved Vegemite.  Hmm, how about “Yucky brown spread,” anyone?

Anyway, if you meet an Aussie when you’re out and about, you can tell him, “G’day, bloke!” and say, “Pass the new and improved Vegemite!  And yes, throw another shrimp on the Barbie while you’re at it!”

I had no idea that line in that song was about Vegemite! I thought the words were, “He just smiled and gave me a piece of my sandwich.” LOL!

I just heard the song “Down Under” today. Love that 80′s music. I didn’t know that the lead singer from Men at Work had cameos in Scrubs! Cool!

My husband says he tried vegemite while he was in Australia and (in his opinion) it is one of the most disgusting foods ever invented.

Yvonne, I totally agree. It is like someone took the sluice from the bottom of the garbage truck, put it in a jar, and sold it. VILE stuff. Just vile.
