How you can help with Haiti relief
The situation in Haiti is a very real problem and, quite simply, it won’t go away without some help from abroad. Sending clothes and food is all fine and good, but money is what is really needed in this rescue effort because it can be utilized quicker in providing the absolute necessities (water, medical supplies, hospital beds, etc.).
If you are interested in donating to the Haiti Relief fund, the easiest way is to text the word “Haiti” to 90999. $10 will be added to your cell phone bill and will go directly to the Red Cross to aid Haiti. You can also go directly to RedCross.org and donate whatever you please (click on the “Donate Now” link in the middle of the page). Note that you can choose 5 options of donating (International Response Fund, Disaster Relief Fund, etc.). With Haiti being the most in need right now, the odds are that most of your money will go to that cause regardless of your choice. You can also send a check and specify a cause. Lastly, you can donate to the Red Cross over the phone at 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).
If you prefer a different organization, refer to the NetworkForGood.org for a list of approved organizations by the Better Business Bureau. If you want to make sure your donation is being used properly, always send it direct and preferably to an organization with a long and reputable past (that’s why I recommend the Red Cross).
Help of any kind and any amount can add a small positive note on a very negative situation. Keep checking in to see the results of the Dinner Topics t-shirt giveaway and how Dinner Topics intends on helping with the Haiti situation.
