Boxing Day – no gloves required

No relation to Boxing Day
Boxing Day is always on December 26th, but it is being observed in many countries today because the 26th fell on a weekend. Americans are often unfamiliar with Boxing Day, but it is celebrated in well over a dozen countries including Canada and the United Kingdom. By celebrated, I mean people get the day off from work and sit around watching the DVDs they received for Christmas.
The exact reason for the term “Boxing Day” is unclear, but the tradition is that it was the day when merchants would give employees and servants the day off while the upper class would have a simple buffet-style lunch without being served. Various traditions involve giving servants boxes of food and money, but no single source has been confirmed as the official reason for the day’s name.
Because it’s on just about every calendar, even in America, someone around the water cooler will make a Boxing Day comment without really knowing what it is. Now you can tell them.
