Yom Kippur
Yesterday evening at sundown began Yom Kippur, and for those of us who are not Jewish, that may not mean a lot. While it may not affect you, it’s always good to understand the basics of other religions, so here is a quick briefing.
Yom Kippur is known as the most holy Jewish holiday. At it’s basic level, it is a day of atonement1 (reconciliation or amends). Fasting, prayer, and repentance are practiced as many Jews attend synagogue for most of the day as they atone for their sins between themselves and God. The fasting is supposed to be 25 hours long (including no water!) beginning at sunset until sundown the next night.
