Paintings Pilfered in Paris

"I didn't do it!"

Ok, ”pilfered” is a poor word choice when describing a heist valued at nine figures, but the alliteration in the title got you here, didn’t it? Normally, Dinner Topics likes to briefly explain the “behind the scenes” of the topics you should know about, but this one pretty much speaks for itself and I just couldn’t pass it up.

“A thief stole five paintings valued at more than $100 million, including major works by Picasso and Matisse, in an overnight heist Thursday at a Paris modern art museum with a broken alarm system, officials said.”1

Yes, you read that right – the alarm system had been broken for about SEVEN WEEKS, and shockingly, someone decided to make off with the goods.  The story goes on to mention that a deputy culture secretary at Paris City Hall suggested a “sophisticated” group must have been involved.  Then, in the very next sentence, the story indicates how the intruder(s) entered: by breaking a window and cutting a padlock.  Hardly the work of a Thomas Crown or Neal Caffrey.  Enjoy bringing this heist story up at dinner tonight!
