Paczki Day

paczkiIn certain Midwest cities around the U.S., today is not only called Fat Tuesday but Paczki Day (pronounced “ponch-key” or “poonch-key”).  As a result of the large amounts of Polish immigrants in some cities such as Chicago, a newer tradition has spawned in which people of all nationalities line up outside bakeries on the Tuesday morning before Lent to buy paczki, a Polish cream-filled or jelly-filled kind of doughnut.

The original tradition in Poland began on Fat THURSDAY.  “Traditionally, the reason for making pączki was to use up all the lard, sugar, eggs and fruit in the house, which are forbidden during Lent.”  (Source: Wikipedia.org)
