Nobel Prize is the best kind of Prize ($$)

Alfred Nobel
This year’s Nobel Prizes were announced over the past week or so. Prizes are awarded for Literature, Chemistry, Physics, Physiology or Medicine, and of course the most famous of all, the Nobel Peace Prize. In a shocker, it was just announced that President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.
An appointed committee of five people decide on the winners each year. As for the Nobel Peace Prize, Alfred Nobel’s1 will stated that
“it was to be awarded to the person ‘who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses’.”2
Wondering what the winners get besides a fancy ceremony? They get a medal, a diploma, and cash. Yup, I said cash. Not just a small friendly check either. The amount is conditional upon the success of the Nobel Foundation, but 2008 winners received about $1.72 million each!!3 I think it’s time I started getting my kids to hug it out a little more. If you see the committee members, please tell them about me!

Alfred Nobel invented dynamite! He established the peace prize in his will. He wanted to use the fortune he amassed from explosives to reward peace.
