Who is Scott Brown?
By now, you probably know that Scott Brown, a Republican, won the U.S. Senate seat previously held by Ted Kennedy in a huge upset of an election in Massachusetts the other day. Being an avid reader of Dinner Topics, you also know that as a Republican replacing a Democrat in the Senate, the Democrat’s supermajority in the Senate has been erased. With some other Senate elections occurring soon, the future of the supermajority was going to be tested anyway, but nobody thought it would end with the Massachusetts election. While you debate politics with your friends (always a healthy full-contact sport), here are a few facts about the Scott Brown, the “new guy” in Washington:
- Succeeded Paul Kirk for the Senate seat1 and defeated Martha Coakley in this week’s election
- Graduated from Tufts and Boston College Law School
- Served multiple terms in the Massachusetts state House of Representatives and the Massachusetts state Senate
- Joined the National Guard at 19
- Did some modeling in his 20s, including a nude photo shoot for Cosmopolitan
- Married to a news reporter (Gail Huff) and has two daughters, one of whom was a semi-finalist on American Idol
My favorite quote on our nation’s love for “change” and lack of patience comes from Yvonne Abraham of the Boston Globe:
Change: Voters love it, they told us on Tuesday. But they don’t want to wait for it. For example, if you elect a president because you want change, and he doesn’t transform the world in a year, it’s time to change again, even if that means voting for the party that blocks his every move.2
