Rebellion in Libya
Dinner Topics has kept you abreast of the problems in Libya the past few years, and if you’ve been following this blog, you already know this:
- Gaddafi was involved in the Lockerbie Controversy.
- Libya is located in northern Africa.
- Gaddafi made a trip to America a couple years ago.
- There are more ways to spell Gaddafi than there are McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. (Gadhafi, Qaddafi, etc.).
- Rebels have been unhappy with Gaddafi’s authoritarianism for over 40 years.
The situation in Libya recently went from aggressive protests to a complete rebel attempt of overthrowing Gaddafi. Specifically,
“Gadhafi has held power in Libya since a September 1969 coup. The rebellion against him began in February and has been aided by NATO air strikes that began in March, under a U.N. mandate to protect civilians.”1
Right now, rebels appear to have seized Gaddafi’s compound in Tripoli but are still having to defend themselves against Gaddafi forces. As this is not a peaceful overthrow (is there such a thing?), don’t expect a quiet, clean ending anytime soon.
