Obama’s State of the Union – Family Feud
If you didn’t watch last night’s State of the Union address, you didn’t miss anything revolutionary, but it’s still something you should be aware of. One of President Obama’s main stances was to provide help for small businesses, through tax incentives and extended credit thanks to a reported $30 billion in recovered TARP money. Currently, Obama’s government believes the best way to stimulate the economy is via incentives for businesses and individuals that will motivate them to contribute more to the economy (through job hiring, spending, etc.). Republicans lean more toward reducing costs at this point, so the opposing viewpoints have caused quite an uncomfortable vibe during Obama’s speeches. In an attempt to appease them, Obama reiterated the tax cuts made in conjunction with the stimulus package, but Republicans were largely unresponsive.
One other thing you really need to know if you are politically unavailable but plan on being around people: the guy behind Obama is Vice President Joe Biden and the woman is Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
It’s nothing that didn’t happen in the past when the Republicans were in charge, but things seem to be getting more or more catty each year. With every minor statement, those in agreement stood and cheered like it was a U2 concert while those in disagreement sat with pouty looks as if they were chosen last in kickball.
The Democrats and Republicans are more at odds than ever; the House is upset at the Senate for failing to push through approved legislation; politicians have become snarkier than ever, focusing more on “I told you so” or “it was like that when I got here” rather than realistic solutions. It’s infighting and squabbling, just like the dysfunctional family to which we all belong.
