Less cola now, no COLA in 2010

Coca-Cola topsTwo unrelated cola stories – one Dinner Topic post.  Efficiency in action!

Despite the bevy of beverage size choices already, from tiny glass bottles to multi-liter plastic jugs, Coca-Cola is making news by announcing the unveiling of a 7.5 oz. can which will have only 90 calories.  These promotions always make me laugh because there’s nothing more “healthy” about the product – there’s just less of it.  It reminds me of those little 100-calorie snack pouches I see female coworkers always toting around.  It would be a lot more cost-efficient (not to mention environmentally friendly) to just buy the big bag of chips and put a small amount into a baggie for work, but what do I know.  The Coke is a little different because it’s hard to drink 2/3 of a can and keep the rest for another day, but there are other alternatives – 2 liter bottles, sharing, WATER, etc.  Whatever your preference, the smaller can will be available in the U.S. next year.

The other “cola” story in the news has nothing to do with carbonated beverages.  It has just been announced that Social Security recipients will receive no COLA in 2010.

COLA = cost of living adjustment

Inflation is negative and consumer prices are falling, so Social Security payments will remain the same as 2009.  It should be noted that even though inflation is negative, the government will not decrease payments.  In that aspect, your Social Security dollar is worth more than it was last week.  Perhaps you can you that excess to purchase a mini Coke or two!
