Banning Burqas in France
The French senate approved (overwhelmingly) on Tuesday a ban on wearing any veil that covers the face including a burqa. We covered most of this topic back in May ’09, but a few new details are necessary because the subject has resurfaced.
Key facts to supplement any conversation that pops up:
- “According to opinion polls, the French people back the ban by a margin of more than four to one. 82% of people polled approved of a ban, while 17% disapproved.”1
- “France now reside 5 million Muslims, ranking as the largest Islamic community in the European Union.”2
The ban – upheld in a vote on Tuesday – makes France the first European country to nationally impose such a measure, and it will go into effect next spring. The Netherlands seek to propose a country-wide ban as well.
