Pirates Not So Whimsical Anymore
Pirate attacks of late have not exactly been of the Captain Hook or Johnny Depp variety. The Indian Ocean has been a popular place for ship seizing, thanks to a large group of Somali pirates, preying on cargo ships equipped with an unarmed crew.
Just this week, a U.S. cargo ship was attacked by Somali pirates, but the American crew fought off the attack long enough to receive help from the U.S. Navy. Unfortunately, the pirates took the ship’s captain (Richard Phillips) hostage on a lifeboat, but with nowhere to turn, it should be just a matter of time before they surrender and release him.
Geography lesson: Somalia is located on the east coast of Africa, just east of Ethiopia.
