Philippines – Geography and Storm News
If you haven’t already heard, terrible storms and flooding have ravaged the northern portion (circled on the map below) of the Philippines. More than 200 people are already confirmed dead, and almost 2 million people have endured flooded houses and shelters, many of them forced to evacuate. Unfortunately, additional storms are headed in the same direction.
While rescue efforts are made to the many people in peril, the least we can to is educate ourselves about their position and their situation.
Located in southeastern Asia, the Philippines are islands south of Taiwan. Almost 100 million people occupy the islands, which are close in size to Arizona (although that’s a tough comparison because of the differences between a land-locked state and a group of islands surrounded by water).
A healthy mix of service, agriculture1, and industry2 have given the Philippines a chance to survive and thrive in the competitive global economy. For now, though, the focus is on fighting back Mother Nature.
