Key West – Souther than South!
NBC’s Today Show is hanging out in Key West today. Aside from the standard stories of Hemingway and Truman, here’s a quick summary of the city everyone has heard about but few have visited:
- residents are known as Conchs (“conks”)
- the city sits on less than 6 square land miles
- population is estimated at less than 24,000
- the city houses the southernmost point in the continental U.S.
- only 90 miles to Cuba (short distance, but a long swim!)

As you mentioned, everyone knows that Ernest Hemingway was one of the most famous residents of Key West. I love visiting the website for the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, not only b/c I think he was such an intriguing figure and amazing write but also b/c they have live cams that show, among other things, get this, the kitties (his famous 6-toed cats) roaming around the property, sunning themselves, playing with visitors, etc. I think it’s hilarious that they have this on live-cam, for some reason! I’m taken aback by your dinner topic on Key West. You claim that Key West is “the city everyone has heard about, but few have visited”. Your sampling size must be very small since newsday.com estimates the great majority of the Keys 3.9 million annual visitors reach Key West. (http://www.newsday.com/travel/us/florida/explore-all-the-florida-keys-has-to-offer-1.877965).
That doesn’t make it New York or Las Vegas, but I’ve rarely heard any number measured in millions refered to as “few”. It ain’t no dag gum Mayberry, Andy.
