Earthquake in Haiti

Sorry about the lack of a post yesterday – I think I was hung over from celebrating a binary palindrome day on Monday.  Back to your regularly scheduled Dinner Topic.

The most important story hitting the wires right now is the tragic earthquake in Haiti.  The massive quake has already crumbled buildings, destroyed a hospital, damaged the airport in Port-au-Prince, and left many dead and missing.  While the Associated Press and other big news outlets will keep you up to date on the conditions and the situation, Dinner Topics can at least educate you about the place you’ll keep hearing about.

Haiti is in the Caribbean on an island known as Hispaniola, and it shares that land with the larger Dominican Republic to the east.  According to the CIA Factbook, Haiti is about the size of Maryland.  “Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with 80% of the population living under the poverty line and 54% in abject poverty.” 1

Port-au-Prince is the capital of Haiti, as well as the largest city in the country.  Look at the map to see Haiti’s relation to the United States (southeast of Florida).
