What Is Bakugan?

bakuganIf you have any sons or nephews of single-digit or tween age, you may be familiar with Bakugan.  For the rest of the world, Bakugan is a popular plastic toy shaped like a ball.  When the ball touches a magnet (or the magnetic playing card that comes with it), the ball opens to reveal a creature.

Like many Japanese children’s toys that become a hit in America, Bakugan is more than just a toy – it’s a game as well – a confusing pointless game that uses the ball, the cards, addition, and a little mythology.  Don’t worry about learning the rules, though.  From my limited experience, I have found that 99% of the kids just enjoy the toys for what they are, skipping the “game” portion entirely.  For those old enough to want to “battle,” they don’t want you around anyway.

Following in the footsteps of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, a Bakugan cartoon and DVDs already exist, and don’t be surprised to see a movie in the future.

Bonus info:if you show up at your nephew’s party and want to be “in the know,” don’t call them “Bakugans.”  The plural form is still “Bakugan” so you can tell little Billy that his two Bakugan he got for his birthday are no match for the 24 Bakugan you have at home – your lonely, sad, bachelor pad home.  Oh, and it’s pronounced “bock-oo-gahn.”
