Welcome Back Woodstock!
Earlier this month, the 40th anniversary of Woodstock passed us by. Not coincidentally, the musical and cinematic worlds have taken notice and thrust it back in the news. Several anniversary concerts and festivals starring some of the original performers have already taken place but with little fanfare. A movie by Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Hulk, etc.) titled Taking Woodstock was just released in theaters today, and a 40th Anniversary Edition of Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director’s Cut is now available on DVD.
It’s a good bet that someone around you will be talking about Woodstock this weekend, and you need to have something up your sleeve for the conversation. Everyone already knows the basics about Woodstock (3-day music festival in upstate NY in 1969, filled with rain, traffic jams, plenty of bands and drugs) including the main performers, such as Hendrix, CSN&Y, Joplin, Cocker, etc. If you are talking to someone born AFTER 1969, you might be able to get away with this bit of information:
John Sebastian, formerly of The Lovin’ Spoonful, was also a pretty big name at Woodstock. Did you know that several years later, Sebastian wrote the theme song to Welcome Back, Kotter? If they claim they already knew that, just tell ‘em “up your nose with a rubber hose!”
