Twilight – Books, Movies, Etc.
Rumors are swirling out of the Cannes Film Festival that producers already have green-lit a fourth and final film in the Twilight series. If you are asking yourself how Hollywood could be down the road with a fourth film when you haven’t even heard of the series, I’ll bet you don’t have an adolescent girl in your household.
The Twilight films were born out of a series of novels penned by Stephenie Meyer. The books tell the tale of Isabella “Bella” Swan, a newly-transplanted high school student who falls madly in love Edward Cullen, a mysterious and dashing co-ed who just so happens to be a vampire. The opening novel, Twilight (2005), explores the conflict that emerges as Bella risks life and death to pursue her attraction to the dangerous vampire. While the novel garnered mixed criticism, it was a commercial smash. Meyer rode the wave of success of the original and filled-out the four-book series with New Moon (2006), Eclipse (2007) and Breaking Dawn (2008).
The film adaptation of the original novel, under the same title, generated only lukewarm reviews but became a box office sensation during the winter of 2008. The film generated nearly $400 million worldwide thanks in large part to the throngs of teenage girls who were entranced enough with the storyline to pay multiple visits to the theater. The movie also made instant stars of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, who play Edward and Bella, respectively. The second film, under the working title: The Twilight Saga: New Moon, is scheduled to premiere on November 20, 2009. Of course if you have a young adult girl in the house, chances are you already knew that.
