The Simpsons: lasting longer than many marriages
Tonight, The Simpsons is celebrating its 20th anniversary1 by airing its 450th episode. That’s a lot of Milhouse jokes over the past two decades. If you’re not a Simpsons fan, here are some general notes to know when people starting chatting up their favorite quotes around you:
- The show originally began as a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show.
- Michael Jackson and three of the Beatles (sans Lennon of course) appeared as voices in separate episodes over the years.
- Sideshow Bob (voiced by Kelsey Grammer) has tried to kill Bart in some of the best episodes over the 20 years.
- The creator’s name (Matt Groening) is pronounced “GRAY-ning”.
- Homer’s neighbor Ned Flanders was raised by hippy parents.
- The Simpsons has become the longest running primetime series in the history of television (even though it seems like Law & Order has been on for 50 years).
