The Last Airbender: critics say “skip it”
With the Twilight hype is still rolling along (Eclipse debuted to a record Wednesday haul and is still raking in the dough), it’s not your only choice at the theaters this weekend. Then again, M. Night Shyamalan’s latest movie, according to the critics, isn’t a viable option for those who enjoy a good time at the show.
Shyamalan is the guy who wrote and directed The Sixth Sense, propelling him into immediate stardom unseen by most screenwriters. Unbreakable and Signs, Shyamalan’s next two movies, were financially successful and a moderate hit with the critics. Then suddenly the next offerings were not received as well (Lady in the Water was widely panned) and the same appears true for M. Night’s new film, The Last Airbender. The movie is based on a Nickelodeon animated series called Avatar: The Last Airbender1, but Shyamalan’s movie is live action.
Just released today, critics have already been far from kind to The Last Airbender. Roger Ebert gave the movie a half star, and he’s been pretty soft of late. USA Today is the only major publication with a truly positive review at this point, so while the only opinion that matters is yours, it’s still helpful to know that very few are recommending Shyamalan’s movie as a way to spend two hours of your extended weekend.
