Speaking in tongues with Perry’s parents

Singer/songwriter/girl kisser Katy Perry made news this week by mentioning in a Rolling Stones interview that her parents would speak in tongues during her childhood.  Oddly enough, it wasn’t the first time she made such a statement.  Over a year and a half ago, Perry made similar comments about her parents during an interview with Katie Couric (video below).

Rather than debate the merits of her statement and whether Katy can actually prove her parents’ “ability,” let’s focus on the facts of what it means to speak in tongues.  Skeptics will say that speaking in tongues is nothing more than gibberish or “fabricated, meaningless speech.” 1  Believers claim it is “Holy Spirit inspired speech in a language unknown to the speaker.” 2  Either way, if even the speaker himself can’t explain the sounds he’s making, it’s tough to prove the legitimacy of the noises being made, so this is a debate based more on the argument of faith over fact.  Those always make for a lively night!  If you really want to add fuel to the fire, check out some of the videos on YouTube when searching for “speaking in tongues” and debate why each person’s attempt sounds vastly different than the next.

Bonus fact: speaking in tongues is also called glossolalia.
