Silly Bandz – the latest fad for kids
Depending on where you live, the Silly Bandz fad has been around awhile, but thanks to a couple recent stories from Fox News and Time, they are sure to be a topic at your dinner table soon.
Silly Bandz are nothing more than a brand of collectible rubber bands that are in specific shapes (animals, instruments, sports images, letters, etc.) when they are “at rest,” or not stretched. It’s an extremely simple and cheap idea brought about by a company called Brainchild Products. They can be found online and in the mall. As always when a product becomes a fad, there are plenty of knock-off brands for sale as well at drugstores and other places. The original Silly Bandz come in different packages upwards of a 24-pack costing about $5. Yes, that’s $5 for a handful of rubber bands.
So why are they in the news now? The Fox News storyis about a doctor who claims that having a bunch of tight bands around one’s arm can be harmful to one’s circulation and create possible damage. File that one in the “duh!” folder and don’t bother reading it. The Time story focuses on how several schools have banned the Bandz, citing them as a distraction.
