Paul Harvey and “The Rest of the Story”
Paul Harvey, veteran radio voice, died yesterday at the age of 90. At some point in your life, you undoubtedly were driving with the radio on when an older sounding gentleman came on the air, ending his insightful commentary with “… and now you know the rest of the story.” Harvey’s insights were syndicated on radio stations throughout the country, and his newspaper column could also be read just about anywhere.
Harvey was a conservative, but regardless of your political stance, there was no denying that his commentaries were revolutionary in that they were both informative AND entertaining. Even today, with several cable television stations practically dedicated to documentaries and biographies, many people in the media world still haven’t figured out how to make information interesting. Harvey’s prose and delivery kept you hanging on every word, leading the listener on a journey, anxiously awaiting the end to find out who Paul was talking about. For the past three decades, the style of Paul Harvey’s radio commentaries was to tell the story first, then reveal the person. Simple. Informative. Effective.
