Obama vs. Snooki
Two big events just happened on television: Obama made his first appearance on daytime television on The View as an acting president, and the season two premier of Jersey Shore aired on MTV. Now, these two shows are very different, but they are more related than you think.
- Barack Obama has gotten some heat for being on The View, a daytime talk show; Rosie O’Donnell and Sarah Palin have criticized his appearance on the show. The controversial guest did talk about global and domestic issues, but a large part of the conversation was small talk and gossip about popular culture. Joy Behar, one of the hosts, asked Obama if he thought Snooki (more on her below) should “run as mayor of Wasilla”. While Obama got the reference to Sarah Palin’s position as mayor of Wasilla, he stated that he did not know who Snooki was.
- The Jersey Shore season premier aired the same day as The View with Obama. If you don’t know what the show is about, it’s about a group of rambunctious Italian-descent 20-somethings who live, drink, and party together. The show has also garnered some criticism for stereotyping Italian-Americans. Jersey Shore’s crazy reality-show antics may not seem political at all, but Snooki, one of the stars of the show, shared her political views about Obama on the premiere. Because she loves her tanning, she appropriately got mad at Obama’s 10% tax on all tanning beds.
Searching through the old news, one reporter found that Obama actually referenced Snooki in one of his speeches.
“The following individuals shall be excluded from the indoor tanning tax within this bill. Snooki, J-WOWW, the Situation, and House Minority Leader John Boehner.”
However, Snooki did just the opposite; when she heard that Obama said he didn’t know her she jokingly said,
“I’ve heard of Barack Obama, but I don’t know who that is. I guess I don’t really follow sports.”
So both shows are very connected. Both episodes aired with controversy. They both referenced each other. Obama doesn’t know Snooki, but actually does, and Snooki knows who Obama is, but then she doesn’t. So in a blatant effort to get some discussion going on in the comments section, I ask the readers of Dinner Topics who would win in a fight, Obama or Snooki? Snooki’s been through some fist fights on Jersey Shore, but Obama was very agile when he killed that fly once during that interview. So vote below!
