PG-13 Rating Restrictions and the F-bomb

The first PG-13 movie

The first PG-13 movie

Ever wonder what can and cannot go into a PG-13 movie?  The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) lays out the groundwork, and they don’t like foul language or sex, but they don’t mind violence so much.  Get this: no “sexually oriented” nudity is allowed andonly one F-bomb is allowed, but ONLY if it is uttered in a way that isn’t in a sexual context.  Drug use is ok to a point.  Violence is welcome as long as it isn’t “realistic AND extreme or persistent.”

Using the MPAA’s rules for a PG-13 rating as a guideline, it would acceptable to say “I’m going to f***ing kill you” but NOT acceptable to say “I want to f*** you.”  Make of that what you will.  If you are having a debate tonight about the effects of children’s exposure to violence and sex, feel free to use the F-bomb anecdote.
