Grammy Awards Still Confusing

grammyThe 51st Grammy Awards were broadcast last night, and the awards seem to get more confusing each year.  There are a slew of “performance” awards for the artists and just as many “song” awards for the songwriters.  The confusion comes from trying to determine who fits into what category.  Songs and artists aren’t easily classified as rap/rock/alternative/country/pop/jazz/etc.  In fact, pop means “popular,” so couldn’t anyone fit into the pop category?

One post isn’t enough to explain all the awards, and the main awards are the only ones people remember anyway, so here is an end to the confusion between Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year.  The Record Of The Year is awarded to the artist and producer of a single.  In other words, the Record award is for the performance, kind of.  Song Of The Year is awarded to the songwriter, so technically, a fabulously written song can win Song Of The Year even if it is sung by me.  Record Of The Year is still a little ambiguous, because I can’t imagine a well-produced, well-performed, badly written song winning the award.

I suppose this didn’t end the confusion, because winning the Song Of The Year but not the Record Of The Year is like telling the artist he or she was given ample material but didn’t follow through.  No one will ever know the thought process of HOW they choose the nominees and the winners, but at least now you know how the big awards are defined.
