Glee – TV’s first MuCom?

lynchThe fall TV season is approaching and there’s a good chance you’re going to be involved in a discussion about what shows you plan on watching this year.  Long weekends tend to bring out the most trivial in people.  Whether you plan on watching it or not, the one show you should be familiar with before that dinner party is Glee (airing on Fox).

You’ve heard of mixed genre shows, such as a “dramedy” or “rom-com”, but Glee might be the first “mu-com” to hit the air since Cop Rock, although that was unintentional comedy.  Set as a musical comedy, Glee centers around a high school glee club trying to return the group to its former glory.  It is not just a show about teenagers, however, as the adult roles will figure prominently in the episodes as well.

What makes Glee newsworthy (and worthy of a Dinner Topics post) is its path to the airwaves.  While Fox considers this upcoming season its premiere season, the pilot episode of Glee was actually shown back in May after American Idol.  The ratings were good, but rather than make Gleea summer series, Fox took it off the air and scheduled it for a normal fall release.  In these summer months, the pilot episode has been available on Hulu and other sources, and the network has promoted the series like crazy, including sending the cast to malls for appearances even though the public only knows them from one episode.  The pilot was just repeated yesterday and will be shown once more before a new episode airs.

If Glee maintains a high quality production and garners solid ratings, the unorthodox tease and pre-market strategy will have paid off.  Or, a few bad episodes in a row might result in the show being an expensive cancellation in a sea of other TV choices.  Either way, you now know what that group of females will be talking about at your next gathering.
