Explaining away the Oscar Curse
News just broke that Oscar winner for Best Actress Sandra Bullock just moved out of her home because of a supposed affair by her husband Jesse James with a model. That got some of the entertainment websites talking about an Oscar curse.
If you haven’t noticed, two thirds of the Best Actress winners in the past dozen years have had big public breakups with their husbands or boyfriends shortly after winning. The names and breakups are all familiar: Hilary Swank, Helen Hunt, Reese Witherspoon, Julia Roberts, etc., and it does sound a little creepy upon first read.
You may want to suggest this, however, when people start talking about the “bad luck” of these women and/or men: pick ANY twelve relationships between two celebrities currently. My guess is that more than half will be over in 18 months, getting the number close to the supposed Oscar curse. Also, the “curse” includes boyfriends, not just husbands, so it’s not like there are eight divorces involved.
Breaking up with a boyfriend in Hollywood happens as often as the ordering of a Starbucks nonfat latte in celebrity circles. Furthermore, Julia Roberts has had three marriages and almost a fourth (running away from Kiefer Sutherland days before the wedding), so the ending of her marriage wasn’t exactly unprecedented. Just ask Lyle Lovett.
I don’t wish divorce on anyone, but before you jump on the bandwagon of blaming a gold statue for a relationship’s undoing, consider the odd statistic within the context which it falls.
