Emmy Education

The Emmys are hardly the Oscars, but they still get talked about the next day and even if you missed the show, you’re still likely to see a winner’s list in the paper or online.  Here’s a few things you should know that might have slipped by you unless you’re a diehard TV fan.

Justin Timberlake won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series for hosting Saturday Night Live.  Whether you like his music or not, JT is funny and always seems willing to be self deprecating when needed.  His SNL spots are worth finding on Hulu.

Were you confused about any references to Dr. HorribleDr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blogis a three-part webisode about 40 minutes long, intended for the internet only, that debuted in July 2008 during the writers’ strike.  Starring Neil Patrick Harris (the host of the Emmys) and created by the guy (Joss Whedon) who created the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, Dr. Horriblebecame a huge hit and now can be found for sale on iTunes or by DVD purchase.

ColletteToni Collette won for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for her role in the United States of Tara.  Huh?  Don’t worry, no one else saw the show either, but all 12 episodes aired on Showtime and are the creation of Junowriter Diablo Cody.  Collette is best known as the mom from The Sixth Sense but has held steady work in the decade since her son saw dead people.

CranstonLastly, that guy with the shaved head named Bryan Cranston won for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series for his role in Breaking Bad, a show you haven’t seen on AMC where Cranston plays a meth-dealing chemistry teacher.  If he looks familiar to you, it’s because he was the dad in Malcolm in the Middleand also played Tim Whatley, the dentist (or “anti-dentite”) in several Seinfeld episodes.

Now you’re up to speed on the less popular winners from last night and you can go back to not watching their shows until next year.
