Defining Gypsies
Madonna, decades removed from being a “material girl,” still manages to find ways to get herself in the news. This time, the pop star is popping up in headlines because she defended Gypsies at her concert in Bucharest. Many Americans associate the word “gypsy” with a deragatory meaning, thinking back to wandering groups of people moving across the country, often making money by questionable means.
The Gypsies Madonna was defending, however, are the people who comprise the European ethnic group known as Roma, or Romani. Found primarily throughout Europe (but not exclusively), Roma were often subjected to slavery two hundred years ago and have had trouble reaching equality ever since.
Whether you love or hate Madonna’s music, you have to give the Material Girl credit for voicing her opinion, even if it alienates her fans.
