Chelsea Handler – the queen of late night?
Every media outlet (this site included) has spent millions of words on the late night wars surrounding Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno, and David Letterman. Hang around someone not 52 years old and male, however, and you’re more likely to hear the name Chelsea rather than Conan. I’m talking about Chelsea Handler, and if you don’t know about her yet, you need to learn quickly before you find yourself surrounded by a group of women at a wine tasting.
Chelsea Handler is a comedian who has parlayed her talent into multiple television appearances and shows as well as a handful of books. Currently, Handler is hosting Chelsea Lately on the E! Network, a late night talk show airing four nights a week. At a half hour, the show has a similar format as Leno and company (monologue, skits, guest, etc.), but it is presented in more rapid fire succession. In other words, no filler time for bad jokes.
Handler comes off intentionally as brash, outspoken, and politically incorrect, yet still genuine. Her TV persona doesn’t appear to be an act. Chelsea Lately focuses largely on pop culture and making fun of the absurdness of celebrity. Thriving on making the audience uncomfortable, Handler gets much of her comedy from the awkwardness of past experiences.
Her latest book is titled Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang, released in March complete with a promotional tour. This summer, Handler is filming her show Monday through Thursday and performing stand-up comedy on the weekends touring the country.
