Apple’s new tablet is called… the iPad

In geeky gadget circles, Apple’s tablet has been hyped for months (years, by some) with speculation about it’s name, the operating system it will use, how it will get us to Mars quicker, etc.  As a Dinner Topics reader, though, you just want to know what it does, what it costs, and well… what it is.  Steve Jobs (Apple’s CEO and guru of all things gadgety) held a presentation this afternoon debuting the tablet, officially named iPad, and here are the facts you can take to dinner with you tonight:

It seems like prognosticators really nailed the iPad before it came out.  Hypothetical pictures matched the real thing pretty well, but the price of the cheaper model was at the low end of expectations.  That will please Apple fans and, based on the jump in stock price when the iPad price was announced, the market seems to think a lower price will mean more sales and ultimately more profits for Apple. 

What remains to be seen is whether people will actually BUY the iPad.  It’s one thing to say “hey, that’s neat,” but it’s another to pull the trigger on a purchase.  With millions of people already owning iPhones, iPod Touches, and laptops, the desire for a major device in that middle ground between smart phones and computers is tough to gauge, but we’ll find out soon enough if it’s strong enough to sustain a device like the iPad.
